ISPs block 22% of permission-based e-mail, new study finds

Internet service providers, led by RoadRunner, Mail.com and Comcast, blocked 22% of permission-based e-mail last year, Return Path Inc. reports.

Return Path monitored 50,000 e-mail marketing and transactional campaigns sent through its Mailbox Monitor service between January and December. Blocking varied from 1% to 57%, it said.

"ISPs continually change their e-mail acceptance standards to deal with the increase in spam hitting their systems, so companies need to be vigilant about following the e-mail rules if they want to reach the inbox," said George Bilbrey, general manager of Return Path`s Delivery Assurance division.

Blocking rates by ISPs ranged from 5% to 36%. The lowest rates occurred at Earthlink, 5%, BellSouth, 6%, and CompuServe, 8%, Return Path said. The highest blocking rates were at RoadRunner, 36%, Mail.com, 34% and Comcast, 31%.
