Amazon.com buys print-on-demand service BookSurge

Amazon.com Inc. has acquired BookSurge LLC, a print-on-demand service that will give customers access to thousands of out-of-print books. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

BookSurge titles appear on Amazon.com the marketplace or third-party sellers sections. Customers order the titles directly from BookSurge. Among the hard-to-find titles posted on Amazon include an Arabic language version of The Da Vinci Code and Perez and Martina: A Puerto Rican Folktale.

BookSurge sells books worldwide and has fulfillment centers around the world.

“The thing that’s so great about print on demand, especially for an online retailer, is that it allows us to basically have an infinite selection since we don’t have to have the inventory in our warehouses,” an Amazon.com spokeswoman says. “We can make the titles available regardless of whether we’re going to sell three copies or 3,000 copies.”

Amazon also works with a number of other print-on-demand services, including Lightning Source and Trassord.
