iPods continue their strong upward trajectory

Apple Computer Inc. shipped 5.3 million iPods during its fiscal second quarter, up 558% over a year ago, the company reported today. Analysts note that the continued strong demand for digital music devices bodes well for the future of online music downloads.

Apple also reported that it shipped 1.07 million Macintosh computers in the quarter, up 43% from the year-ago quarter.

Q2 revenue reached $3.24 billion, up 70% from a year ago, while earnings were $290 million vs. $43 million a year ago.

"We are delighted to report a record second quarter for Apple in both revenue and earnings," said Steve Jobs, Apple`s CEO. "Apple is firing on all cylinders and we have some incredible new products in the pipeline for the coming year, starting with Mac OS X Tiger later this month."
