Q1 gross merchandise sales at eBay rise 32% to $10.6 billion
Gross merchandise sales at eBay Inc. rose 32% in the first quarter ended March 31, to $10.6 billion from $8 billion in the year-ago period, the company said today. Gross merchandise sales account for the total value of goods sold over eBay.com.
The number of listings of items for sale in Q1 rose 32% to 431.8 million, up from 327.7 million a year ago. That included 32 million new listings in eBay Stores, compared to 8 million new listings in eBay Stores in Q1 2004, eBay said, adding that at the end of Q1 it hosted 264,000 stores worldwide, including 158,000 hosted on its U.S. web site.
EBay said it had 12 product categories with $1 billion or more in gross merchandise volume: eBay Motors, $12.9 billion; consumer electronics, $3.4 billion; computers, $3.2 billion; clothing and accessories, $3.1 billion; books/movies/music, $2.7 billion; home and garden, $2.2 billion; collectibles, $2.2 billion; sports, $1.9 billion; toys, $1.7 billion; jewelry and watches, $1.6 billion; business and industrial, $1.4 billion; and cameras and photo, $1.3 billion.
Fixed-priced trading contributed to about 30%, or $3.2 billion, of total gross merchandise volume in Q1.
EBay said it had 147.1 million registered users at the end of Q1, up 40% from 104.8 million a year ago, and 60.5 million active users, up 34% from 45.1 million. It defines active users as people who have bid, bought or listed an item within the previous 12-month period.
It said consolidated Q1 net revenue rose 36% to a record $1.03 billion, up from $756.2 million a year ago. U.S. net revenue rose 20% to $404.8 million; international marketplace revenue rose 52% to $393.8 million.
Consolidated Q1 net income rose 28% to $256.3 million from $200.1 million a year ago.
