Walmart.com launches customized CD-burning service

Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s Walmart.com has launched a customized CD service that lets customers choose from an online catalog of more than 400,000 digital song tracks to build a CD for home delivery. The fee: $4.62 per CD for three songs and packaging, plus 88 cents for each additional song.

Wal-Mart is making the service available only on Walmart.com for now, but will consider offering it in stores through in-store Internet terminals if there is sufficient customer demand, a spokeswoman says. “We will certainly remain open-minded should we find that this is something our store customers are interested in,” she says.

Wal-Mart will market the CD service through web site promotions as well as through e-mail marketing messages coordinated with promotions for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and other special occasions. It will also promote the CD service as a source of wedding favors, the spokeswoman says.

Wal-Mart is also promoting the service as an alternative for consumers who either don’t have or don’t want to use their own CD burner, said Kevin Swint, director of media categories for Walmart.com.

The song catalog covers selections from rock, pop, country, rap, R&B in addition to selections available exclusively through Wal-Mart, the company said.
