Online sales continue their strong growth in Q3
Online retail sales in the third quarter rose 23% to $23.1 billion from $18.8 billion in Q3 2005, comScore Networks Inc. reports. Total retail sales in the third quarter were up 6.3% over a year ago, reports the National Retail Federation trade group.
Online travel spending in Q3 was up 9% from a year ago, reaching $18.2 billion from $16.8 billion.
Retail categories with standout growth in online sales were Consumer Electronics (excluding PC peripherals), up 42%; Apparel & Accessories, up 32%; Sport & Fitness, up 29%; and Computer Software (excluding PC games), up 27%, comScore reports.
For the first three quarters, online retail sales is up 24% over a year ago, reaching $69.1 billion from $55.8 billion. Online travel sales are up 13% to $52.9 billion from $47.1 billion.
ComScore projects that online retail sales this year will exceed $100 billion for the first time.
"With year-over-year growth rates in U.S. online non-travel spending at about 23% in the third quarter, the web continues flexing its muscle as one of the important drivers of retail sales growth," says Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore Networks.
