The newest video viewer: Microsoft`s Xbox console

Through content agreements with movie studios and TV networks, Microsoft Corp. will begin offering later this month Internet downloads of movies and TV shows directly to consumers through its Xbox 360 online gaming console.

Beginning Nov. 22, Xbox 360 users will be able to download through the Internet-based Xbox Live gaming network movie content from Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and TV programs from CBS, MTV Networks, Turner Broadcasting System and the Ultimate Fighting Championship network. The Xbox 360 console is designed to show on-demand video content directly on TV screens, and Xbox users will be able to purchase movie content and rent TV programs, Microsoft says.

“This connects our partners with one of the most coveted audiences in entertainment today, and provides even greater value to our Xbox Live community, allowing them to enjoy the games and entertainment they want, when they want it,” says Peter Moore, corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

“Warner Bros. has been aggressively pursuing a strategy of getting our content to consumers when and where they want it,” says Simon Kenny, president, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “This is a fantastic opportunity to reach the gaming world with our rich menu of content including next-generation formats.”
