A summer sale propels traffic at JCPenney.com

JCPenney.com had the highest boost in traffic among general merchandise retailers for customers shopping from work during the week ending July 7, Nielsen/NetRatings reports. At-work traffic to the site shot up 53% to 526,000 from 343,000 at work. At-home traffic that week grew 36% from 533,000 visitors to 725,000. Nielsen/NetRatings says the growth was the result of a summer clearance sale.

Major traffic generators for the Fourth of July weekend were the movie ticket sites. Traffic at Fandango.com skyrocketed 86% to 381,000 from 205,000 the week before, Nielsen/NetRatings says, while traffic to MovieTickets.com grew 38% to 353,000 from 250,000 and MovieFone.com grew 29% to 1.2 million from 914,00.

"The success of movie-ticketing sites is based on a simple formula--provide consumers with an easier and more convenient way to find out about the latest movies and purchase tickets online," said Kim Pillon, Internet analyst, NetRatings. "Services such as advanced ticket sales to highly-anticipated films will be key drivers to winning new customers."
