Online orders grow 51% and sales 58% last week from year earlier
Online sales last week grew 58% over the week before, BizRate.com Inc. reports. Sales for the week that ended July 13 totaled $839.1 million vs. $531.9 million a year earlier. The number of orders grew 51% to 5.99 million from 3.97 million. The average order grew 4% to $139.96 from $133.96.
Growth in online sales for the year continued their high pace. At the end of last week, total sales for year-to-date were $24.9 billion, up 46% from $17 billion a year earlier. Orders grew 40% to 199.6 million from 142.6 million, while the average order was up 4% to $124.93 from $119.78.
Top-growth category for the week was computer hardware, where sales were 101% higher than last year, followed by gifts and flowers, up 91% and consumer electronics, up 77%. Lowest growth was recorded in sport and outdoor equipment, where sales grew 2%, apparel, which contracted by 2% and office supplies, down 10%.
Highest sales were recorded also in computer hardware, with consumers purchasing $250.2 million of items. Consumers spent $150.2 million online in flowers and gifts and $108.8 million in consumer electronics.
