Alibris goes across the pond for new launch

New and used book e-retailer Alibris Inc. has launched an e-commerce site for the United Kingdom as part of the company’s drive to expand into international book markets. Alibris U.K. features more than 60 million new, out-of-print, rare and second-hand books to English-speaking consumers throughout the United Kingdom as well as sixteen countries in Europe.

Like its American counterpart, the new e-commerce site enables shoppers to order from thousands of independent booksellers based in their hometown, in their own country and in overseas locations. Customers can purchase books with their local currency—Alibris now accepts the British pound sterling, the Euro and 11 other currencies. As part of the launch, Alibris has reduced prices for U.K. and European shoppers by 30% to 50%.

Further, Alibris U.K. offers direct shipping on orders destined for British or European addresses. With this direct-shipping upgrade, parcel delivery times have been cut in half, says Alibris chairman and CEO Martin Manley.

Alibris is No. 108 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites.
