Buy.com piles on holiday purchasing incentives


Buy.com is introducing a flurry of incentives to drive holiday traffic and sales.

Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Buy.com, No. 36 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, offered discounts of up to 65% on HDTVs, digital cameras, electronics, books, DVDs, CDs and other merchandise.

The online retailer also offered deeper discounts to customers using Google Checkout, which it introduced in June. For a limited time, in addition to the existing $10 off purchases of $30 or more, customers also receive $20 off purchases of $50 if they used Google Checkout to complete their transaction. "We are bringing aggressive discounts and expanded offers to our customers this season," says Doug Marrs, vice president of marketing for Buy.com.

In August Buy.com partnered with Grouper Networks Inc., a user-generated video sharing service. The move enabled Buy.com users to watch, share, create and upload video product reviews via Grouper’s Video Partnership Program, which employs the company’s new one-click WebCam technology. Buy.com shoppers can create and watch video reviews embedded directly on product pages.

The WebCam feature enables user-friendly, instantaneous recording and uploading of video reviews, which provide more information about products from an unbiased source, Buy.com executives say.

To increase the number of videos during the holidays, Buy.com is introducing a video review contest. If shoppers create their own product reviews using Buy.com`s video upload system in certain categories before Dec. 20, they are eligible to win a home theater holiday wish list which includes a Slingbox Pro, Motorola Q, Toshiba Satellite Notebook, Viewsonic LCD HDTV and a Linksys Wireless-G broadband router. “The contest will introduce our new video review capabilities to our customers,” says Marrs.
