Niketown.com jumps on the free shipping bandwagon

Many retailers and retail analysts keep hoping free shipping will go away--it’s been a potent weapon for spurring online sales over the years but it’s an impediment to profitability. While the free-shipping frenzy had died down last year and earlier this year, it appears to be picking up steam now. Amazon earlier this year reduced its minimum order for free shipping and Buy.com retaliated with free shipping on all orders. Now Nike Inc.’s Niketown.com is offering free shipping on all orders.

While Nike is positioning free shipping as a limited-time offer to coincide with back-to-school shopping, the company won’t say how long the offer will last. Nike usually offers free ground shipping for orders totaling $200 or more.

Nike is using the offer to promote its Nike iD personalized footwear as well as other school-related items like backpacks.
