Apparel sales on the web up 7% in Q2, says comScore

Online sales of apparel products rose 7% in the second quarter over the year-earlier period, to $1.3 billion from $1.21 billion, reports research firm comScore Networks Inc. ComScore says July apparel sales, at $353 million, are up 3% over July of last year.

ComScore also reports, however, that Q2 and July apparel sales are down from earlier periods this year. It notes that Q2 decreased 2% over Q1, and that July fell 15% from June.

But it expects the category to improve throughout the summer. "Apparel is a category we expect to see picking up in the later part of the back-to-school season," says Dan Hess, vice president of comScore. "We expect to see a stronger performance in (online) apparel as people prepare their wardrobes for the return to campus, then arrive in school with another wave of shopping as they see what everyone else is wearing."
