Online shopping up 30% for week ending Jan. 11
Online consumer spending for the week ending Jan. 11 grew 30% to $1.18 billion from $906 million the year before, comScore Networks Inc. reports.
Total retail sales grew a robust 14.4% from the same week a year ago, reports ShopperTrak’s National Retail Sales Estimate. It was the third week of year-over-year, double-digit growth in total sales, ShopperTrak says. It attributes the strong retail performance to the redemption of gift cards received as Christmas presents. Retailers are not allowed to recognize revenue from gift cards until they are redeemed. “This positive momentum is clearly a strong indicator for enthusiastic retail sales for the new month and throughout 2004,” says Michael Niemira, lead consult for ShopperTrak.
Online travel sales for the same were up 13% vs. the corresponding week a year ago to $981 million from $868 million, comScore reports.
