Apparel takes the lead in early holiday spending, with 19% of sales

Apparel and accessories captured the largest share of spending on the Monday following Thanksgiving, representing 19% of sales, according to Nielsen/Net Ratings Inc. Office supplies came in second, representing 13% of spending, followed by computer hardware (11%); home and garden (10%); toys, games and hobbies (8%); consumer electronics (7%); shoes and athletic footwear (5%); books (3%); flowers, greetings and specialty gifts (3%); and DVDs and videos (3%).

The computer hardware category had the largest average order size ($283.31); followed by office supplies ($159.49); flowers, greetings and specialty gifts ($129.55); consumer electronics ($108.68); apparel and accessories ($75.79); shoes and athletic footwear ($57.23); home and garden ($56.57); toys, games and hobbies ($41.98); DVDs and videos ($27.29); and books ($23.21).

“Apparel led online spending on Cyber Monday as one of the most popular holiday gifts,” says Heather Dougherty, senior retail analyst. “And some shoppers may be loath to admit it, but they’re also taking advantage of the plethora of promotions and discounts currently available to purchase a few items for themselves during this season of giving.”
