Google Checkout extends free transaction processing through year-end 2007
Google Checkout has extended through year-end 2007 an offer to process all Google Checkout sales for free, regardless of whether merchants use Google’s AdWords. Google decided to extend the promotion—originally scheduled to run between Nov. 8 and Dec. 31—because of the positive response from merchants, says Gavin Chan, product marketing manager.
The standard rate for using Google Checkout is 2% of a sale plus 20 cents per transaction. Under the Checkout program, merchants who use the AdWords search advertising program can process $10 in sales at no charge for every $1 they spend on AdWords.
But during the promotion, merchants using Google Checkout will receive free processing regardless of what they spend on AdWords. Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, the standard transaction fee will apply again, and regular free transaction processing based on a retailer’s December 2007 AdWords spending will resume.
Google Checkout also has added several features for retailers with merchant accounts, including the ability to create coupons at Google Checkout’s merchant center. Merchants can specify dollars-off or percent-off coupons, as well as add restrictions, such as “one per customer” or “new customers only.”
Another feature enables retailers to bill customers for purchases by sending them a Google Checkout invoice via e-mail. The e-mail will carry a link that customers can click to pay via Google Checkout.
Google Checkout also introduced a simplified HTML-based option for retailers to integrate Checkout into their site.
