Nov. 29 is leading online shopping day so far, says Nielsen/NetRatings

So far, Nov. 29 is the champ shopping day in terms of visits to the sites that make up Nielsen/NetRatings’ Holiday eShopping Index. 30.3 million shoppers visited the sites in the index, 18% more than last year, Nielsen/NetRatings reports.

Visits to the sites in the index grew 43% between the last week in October and Dec. 3, compared to 39% a year ago.

The fastest growing product category so far is Toys/Video Games, with online visits increasing 129% since the end of October. Next were Consumer Electronics, up 101%; Jewelry, up 76%; Shopping Comparison Sites/Portals, up 75%; and Home & Garden, up 59%.

The biggest dates are yet to come, some researchers report. Payment processor and fraud risk management company Retail Decision, for instance, predicts Dec. 11 will be the biggest day this year. And the peak that day will occur between 2 and 3 p.m., says Retail Decisions, which bases its forecast on previous years’ experience.
