Target installs a web-based transportation logistics system

Target Corp. is implementing a web-based transportation logistics system for supply chain deliveries from NTE Inc. Until now, Target’s shipping program had been largely manual, involving faxes and paper documents traded among the retailer, suppliers and shipping companies. The system will speed deliveries to and from its 24 distribution centers and 1,400 Target, Marshall Field`s and Mervyn`s stores.

Target says the new system will allow it to improve its load factors, reduce data entry errors, optimize routing decisions by its transportation management system, and disseminate more timely shipment status information without changing its existing supply chain partner relationships.

Target will use NTE’s NTE View product, a new enterprisewide solution that enables supply chain partners to submit ready-to-ship information electronically. "NTE is helping us better manage our logistics function, streamline interactions with our vendors, and produce significant savings," said Steve Carter, director of domestic transportation operations for Target. "But the greater value comes in the form of enhanced visibility and control of our supply chain."

NTE says Target expects to realize millions of dollars in savings in transportation management and planning.

For the Target application, NTE built a customized web interface, created a dashboard with extensive reporting capabilities, built a password-protected site through which Target and its partners collaborate and transact, and conducted online training companywide. NTE maintains and hosts the applications for Target.
