Peapod extends summer test of online grocery shopping on Cape Cod
Peapod’s summer test of online grocery services for Stop & Shop in Cape Cod went so well the company is extending service through October 14 to see if demand continues, or was just the result of an influx of summer visitors. Either way, there’s a good chance the service will continue in some form, according to a Peapod spokeswoman, who terms results from the three-month test “very positive.”
If demand continues through the early fall at summer levels, Peapod will decide whether to make service permanent on Cape Cod, which draws a large number of vacationers from Long Island, Boston and southern Connecticut, three areas in which Peapod operates. If it falls off as vacationers return home, it’s likely Peapod will discontinue the service but consider re-instituting online ordering for the area next summer, says the spokeswoman.
Peapod, a unit of Netherlands-based food supplier company Royal Ahold, is the online shopping and delivery service for Stop & Shop and Giant Foods, two other grocery chains also owned by the Dutch company. Peapod also provides services under its own name in the Chicago market, where it launched as an independent company. Peapod has no immediate plans to enter new markets, the spokeswoman says. “Until we turn a profit as an entity, we will not be looking at expansion,” she adds. However, any future expansion would be in markets where Royal Ahold brands already have a strong brick-and-mortar presence, such as Atlanta, New Jersey and Philadelphia, she adds.
