UPS has a record year with 3.4 billion deliveries
United Parcel Service had a record year for package deliveries in 2003, the company reports, delivering 3.44 billion packages. That translates into a U.S. average daily package volume increase of 4.9% from the previous year. UPS’s peak day volume totaled 20 million packages in the U.S., up 11% from 18 million on its peak day the year before. UPS attributed the volume growth to an increase in online shopping.

U.S. ground volume increased 5.2%, while Next Day Air volume grew 3.5% and deferred air volume rose 4%. Net income in the quarter totaled $856 million, compared to $1.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2002.
Packages sent using UPS Internet Ship grew 50% compared to 2002 and tracking requests surged to a high of 12 million on the busiest day, up a third over the previous year. The company also reports that volume through The UPS Store doubled compared to the prior year.
