Online sales up 21% for week ending Sept. 8
Showing the first signs of slowing down, web-based retail sales for the week ending Sept. 8 were up 21% to $756 million from the same week a year ago, comScore Networks Inc. reported today. Travel sales were up 26% vs. a year ago to $593 million, comScore said. ComScore reports that online retail sales in the first half grew 29% over year-earlier sales.
Biggest growth categories that week included consumer electronics, up 58% vs. year-ago; apparel and accessories, up 53%; and home and garden, up 35%.
ComScore also reported the results of a study of male Baby Boomers--aged 35 to 54--online. That group constitutes 18% of all online users but households headed by male Baby Boomers accounted for 26% of all online purchases in August, comScore said.
Male Baby Boomers’ favorite sites deal with cars, politics, finance, adult media and computers.
