E-learning is saving CVS millions in training costs

An e-learning program at CVS Corp.’s retail pharmacy chain is saving millions of dollars in employee training costs, CVS tells Internet Retailer. In addition to increasing levels of training and improving customer service, the e-learning program is providing increased efficiency in training by vastly increasing attendance at courses.

In the past, CVS would conduct employee training sessions related to new products and store policies at conference hotels around the country. "But only 50% would show up, and the balance we’d never see," says Jeff Tomchik, manager of e-learning technologies at CVS.

CVS implemented Thinq Learning Solutions Inc.’s Thinq Training Server Learning Management System with the chain’s 16,000 pharmacy technicians and is pleased enough with the results it plans to deploy an enterprisewide version to serve its workforce of 100,000. Tomchik adds that the e-learning program has helped CVS pharmacy technicians reach a 97% pass rate on the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exams, compared to a national average of 87%.

The system enables both employees and managers to track employees' progress toward meeting certification requirements through web-based as well as instructor-led courses in classrooms.
