NEW YORK, N.Y.--June 26, 2002-- Barnes & Noble.com (NASDAQ: BNBN) (www.bn.com) today announced the introduction of "What America`s Reading," a new feature that provides hourly, daily and weekly updates on bestselling books. The data is organized in a number of ways, including a "Top Ten" list of bestsellers across all categories and formats at both Barnes & Noble stores and on Barnes & Noble.com; lists of the bestselling titles in more than 300 categories; and charts that track the movement of the top titles. The Top Ten will be discounted at 40 percent off list price at Barnes & Noble.com.

What America`s Reading will be integrated throughout the web site and can be accessed at www.bn.com/bestsellers. "Barnes & Noble`s 600 stores and Barnes & Noble.com serve tens of millions of customers a year. We know what America is reading better than anyone else, and we can report it faster than anyone else," said Marie Toulantis, CEO of Barnes & Noble.com. "This is the definitive list, as measured by Barnes & Noble customers, who are the best barometer in the world of what America is reading. We are pleased to provide this insight along with a 40 percent discount available at Barnes & Noble.com on the Top Ten."

The current Barnes & Noble Top 10 is:

1. Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich 2. The Beach House by James Patterson & Peter De Jonge 3. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells 4. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (movie tie-in edition) by Rebecca Wells 5. The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter 6. The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum 7. Little Altars Everywhere by Rebecca Wells 8. Face the Fire by Nora Roberts 9. The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus 10. Self Matters by Phillip C. McGraw

These regular features will be included in What America`s Reading:

- The Top 10 of Everything: Daily lists of bestselling books in more than 300 categories, from architecture to Zen Buddhism.

- The Bestselling Pre-Ordered Books: A weekly update of the books that are selling online before they hit the shelves. The current list includes The Remnant: On the Brink of Armageddon, the tenth book in the Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins Left Behind series; the paperback version of J. K. Rowling`s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter #4); and Red Rabbit, the upcoming Jack Ryan novel from Tom Clancy.

- The Hot Lists: Intriguing lists that reveal the hidden details, the emerging trends and the highlights from the world of bestsellers. This week`s Hot Lists include the top spy books, a comparison of what`s being read in New York and in Los Angeles, and -- with a nod to the Fourth of the July -- the bestselling presidential biographies and the top road trip books.

- Book Talk: A weekly look behind the numbers. Each week, Book Talk will provide analysis and commentary about what`s buzzing in bestsellers -- the unexpected surprises, the things readers will want to know.

This week, Book Talk reveals that Janet Evanovich dominated the bestseller lists on June 18, when her latest book, Hard Eight, went on sale. Hard Eight and Evanovich`s other Stephanie Plum novels accounted for more than one-third of all mysteries sold that day, and nearly 20 percent of the mysteries sold during the week. Book Talk also discusses the amazing effect the new TV book clubs have had on the sales of Stephen L. Carter`s The Emperor of Ocean Park and Ann Packer`s The Dive from Clausen`s Pier, noting that online sales of Carter`s novel jumped 630 percent on the day it was featured on the Today show.
