Email Service Provider ExactTarget Unveils Sender ID Education Program For Marketers

INDIANAPOLIS - (September 9, 2004) - ExactTarget, a developer of on-demand email software solutions, today announced plans to help educate its nearly 2,500 customers about their role in complying with the new Sender ID standard expected to take effect October 1.

Sender ID is the new email authentication standard created to prevent domain forgery and phishing, the practice of hijacking trusted brands to fool email recipients into divulging personal financial information, such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords, etc.

Sender ID works by requiring email senders to publish an Email Policy Document in their Domain Naming System (DNS) which states which IP addresses are allowed to send email for their domain. This includes Email Service Providers such as ExactTarget. When ISPs receive the email, they`ll check the Sender ID record to ensure that the domain in the email is valid for the IP address that sent the message, ensuring the integrity of the brand.

"The Sender ID email authentication standard requires marketers to publish their Sender ID record, creating logistical and technical difficulties for marketers who do not have technical resources on staff," according to Chip House, vice president of privacy and deliverability at ExactTarget. "We are giving our clients step-by-step tools they need to successfully fulfill the requirements so their emails will be delivered without a problem."

Sender ID is the first of a three-step process. It paves the way for additional verification regarding "Accreditation" and "Reputation." While Sender ID tells you "who" sent the message, accreditation and reputation tells you "who they are," "where they are" and "what their history is as a sender." This allows email recipients to know more about the sender before making an inbox, bulk folder or block decision.

The ExactTarget Sender ID Customer Education Program includes:

Sender ID Q&A explains in plain terms how Sender ID works, how Sender ID differs from SPF, what Microsoft will do with Sender ID records, and other frequently asked questions.

Sender ID Implementation Webinars, scheduled for September 16 and 21 at 2 p.m. Eastern, will provide a step-by-step guide on implementing Sender ID.

Sender ID Whitepaper will detail how Sender ID works, where it fits in the "anti-spam trifecta" and how organizations can become compliant.

Customer Update emails on Sender ID issues and news.
