Broadband web access from home climbs 20% in 5 months
The number of home-based Internet users accessing the web through broadband rose 20% between August and January, to 53.8 million, a broadband penetration of 43%, from 44.9 million, a penetration of 38.9%, according to researchers Nielsen/NetRatings. Consulting firm WebSiteOptimization.com predicts that more than half of home Internet users will link by broadband by June.
WebSiteOptimization notes that most U.S. web users still use dial-up modems at home of 56K or less. 46.6% of all users dial into the web with 56K modems, 7.2% use 28/33.3K modems, and 3.2% use 14.4K modems.
By contrast, it notes that 75.1% of U.S. users use a broadband connection at their place of work.
