More people online, spending more, says a new measure of Internet activity


Nearly 31% of online consumers spent more than $250 online in the third quarter, up from 28% in the fourth quarter of last year, reports the Consumer Internet Barometer, a new quarterly measure of Internet activity from the Conference Board, NFO WorldGroup and Forrester Research Inc.

The new study also reported that nearly 61% of Americans go online at least monthly, up from 59% last year, and 35% go online daily and 15% go online multiple times a week.

In spite of the broad use, retailers have a long way to go to assuring consumers that personal information they provide online is secure. An overwhelming proportion of users--74.5%--say they do not trust the security of their personal information online.
