eBay’s merchandise sales grew 60% in Q3 from year ago


EBay.com continues to grow as a major shopping destination, the company reports. EBay Inc. users transacted a record $3.77 billion in merchandise sales during the third quarter, up 60% from the $2.36 billion reported in Q3 of last year, eBay has reported. Sales growth outstripped product listings, which grew 47% to a record 160 million during the quarter from 109 million a year ago. Fixed price sales, marked by the Buy It Now button, account for 22% of merchandise sales.

In addition, eBay reported that cumulative registered users at the end of the third quarter reached 54.9 million, also a record, up nearly 10% from Q2 and 46% from Q3 last year’s 37.6 million. EBay stores hosts 37,000 U.S. sellers and 14,000 international.

Five eBay categories generate more than $1 billion in worldwide merchandise sales annually: eBay Motors at $3.8 billion, computers at $1.6 billion, consumer electronics at $1.4 billion, books/movies/music at $1.2 billion and sports at $1 billion.

EBay reported total net revenues of $288.8 million for the third quarter. Income reached $61 million.

Users of PayPal, which eBay has acquired, generated $1.79 billion in payment volume, up 93% from the $925 million generated in Q3 2001. PayPal net revenues totaled $59.3 million, representing a 98% increase from a year ago.
