J.C. Penney’s Internet-based sales grow 29% in May


Internet-based sales for J.C. Penney Co. Inc. reached $18 million in May, up 29% from last May’s $14 million. The figure is .8% of J.C. Penney corporatewide sales. Year to date web sales totaled $91 million, up 49% from last year’s YTD web sales of $61 million.

The company today announced that on a comparable store basis, department store sales for the four weeks ended May 26 decreased 1.2% from the same period last year. The best performing merchandise categories for the month were women`s apparel and women`s accessories. Total department store sales for May decreased 4.5% to $987 million from $1.03 billion in the 2000 period.

Comparable drugstore sales increased 8.3% for the month. Pharmacy comparable store sales increased 12.4% and comparable front-end sales increased 1%. Front-end sales were strongest for food and snacks, household products, seasonal merchandise, and cosmetics. Total drugstore sales for May increased 7.1% to $1.06 billion from $996 million in the 2000 period.

Catalog sales for May decreased 14.1% from May 2000.

Total preliminary sales for the Company for the four weeks ended May 26 decreased 0.5% to $2.274 billion from $2.286 billion in last year`s period.
