Wal-Mart.com expands test of in-store pickup program
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is expanding to its new Plano, TX, Supercenter the test of a program that allows customers to have items purchased at Walmart.com shipped free-of-charge to a participating store.
Wal-Mart, which began a trial of its Site to Store program in August 2004 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, also has trials under way in stores in Bentonville, AR, and Mountain View, CA, near the headquarters of Wal-Mart and Walmart.com, respectively, a spokeswoman says.
Under the program, customers can choose from thousands of online-only products at Walmart.com. In-depth product information, including buying guides and detailed product specifications, are posted on the site. Product categories include electronics, ready-to-assemble furniture, baby items, fitness and sporting goods, movies, music and video games.
“Site to Store is intended to provide customers with the best shopping experience possible,” the spokeswoman says. “It offers Wal-Mart store customers access to even more products at Walmart.com that they can pick up directly in a Wal-Mart store.”
Customers are notified by e-mail when the product is ready for pick-up. Delivery takes 7 to 10 days after the order is processed. Customers pick up the items at the stores’ layaway counters.
Walmart.com is No. 12 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites.
