E-mail non-delivery rate averaged 20.5% in 2005’s second half

Top Internet service providers and web-based e-mail providers blocked delivery of 20.5% of permission-based e-mails to consumers during the second half of 2005, according to a new deliverability study from e-mail services provider Return Path. That compares with 21% in the first half, 22% in 2004 and 18.5% in 2003.

Return Path defines non-delivered e-mail as messages that either are delivered to the junk mail folder or not delivered at all.

The range of e-mails blocked ranged from 7.8% (Earthlink) to 42.9% (Excite), according to Return Path. The ISPs with the lowest incidence of blocking and filtering were Earthlink, Mac.com (8.1%) and Compuserve (9.9%). The ISPs with the highest blocking rates were Excite, Gmail (40.4%), Lycos (33.8%), and Adelphia (31%).

Return Path based its study on a sample of 117,761 campaigns sent by clients during the second half.
