Small businesses are active web users, says a new MasterCard survey

A new bi-annual survey from MasterCard International reports that half of all small and home-based businesses purchase goods and services online, spending $45 billion annually. Additionally, the survey reports that many of those same businesses also sell over the Internet, generating online revenue of $56 billion a year.

MasterCard’s Small Business Tracking Survey projects online buying by small businesses will grow 16% over the next six months. The number of small businesses selling online will grow 82% during the same period, the survey says.

The MasterCard Small Business Tracking Survey found that the products and services most frequently purchased online by small and home-based businesses are office supplies (52%); software (51%); books and publications (48%); business equipment (46%); and travel services (45%).

Other key findings:
- 81% have Internet access.
- 51% with Internet access have websites.
- They spend $700 per month on online purchases.
- 88% use payment cards, such as a credit, debit or purchasing card for online purchases.

The survey uses information from a panel of more than 5,000 small and home-based business owners and operators.
