Optics retailer brings foreign language and content sites into focus
While executives at Thralow Inc. can view billions and billions of stars most any night through their company’s telescopes, this year all they want to see is 25 million—dollars, that is.
The company is projecting sales of $25 million this fiscal year. Sales at Thralow—which operates 13 optics and four non-optics e-commerce sites as well as 16 optics and science content sites—increased 51.8% for the 12 months ended March 31, reaching $21.65 million from $14.26 million a year ago.
To increase sales by about $3.5 million this fiscal year, Thralow, No. 260 in the Internet Retailer Top 400 Guide to Retail Web Sites, is looking into adding three foreign language sites—Telescopios.com and Prismaticos.com (binoculars) in Spanish and Nachtvision.com in German—and leveraging its expertise through new and enhanced content sites.
The company is making a major push this year into more online content, says Jonathan Thralow, director of marketing and technology. “We want to roll out more niche e-commerce sites and content sites without sacrificing the quality of service in our existing businesses,” he says.
In addition to the planned foreign language e-commerce sites, the company in January purchased SpottingScopes.com. New content sites have yet to be announced. Current content sites include Binoculars.org, The-Solar-System.net, Moon-Phases.net, The-Planet-Mars.net and WhyistheSkyBlue.org.
