Office Depot’s web sales rocket 74% year to date
Worldwide Internet-based sales at Delray Beach, FL-based Office Depot Inc., retailer of office products, grew 64% to $360.2 million during the second quarter from $220.3 million for the second quarter of 2000, Office Depot reported today. Worldwide e-commerce sales grew for the first six months of 2001 by 74% to $719.6 million vs. $412.9 million in 2000. Office Depot operates 12 web sites around the world, including two in the U.S. and a corporate web site.
Companywide Q2 sales decreased 3% to $2.6 billion compared to the second quarter of 2000. Sales for the first six months of 2001 decreased 2% to $5.6 billion vs. the first half of 2000. Comparable-store sales worldwide decreased 2% for the second quarter and 1% for the first half of 2001.
The company recorded net income of $42 million for the second quarter as compared to $57.9 million for the same period in 2000. Year to date, Office Depot recorded net income of $98.3 million compared to $167 million for the same period in 2000.
