Akamai’s Q2 revenue grows 137% from Q2 2000

Cambridge, MA-based Akamai Technologies Inc., the content delivery company cited for helping such online retailers as VictoriasSecret.com better connect to its customers, is reporting second quarter revenues of $43.1 million, a 137% increase from $18.1 million in Q2 last year. Akamai’s content delivery products allow consumers worldwide to access web information stored on local servers, rather than at the point of origin. The process speeds up download time for consumers and helps web operators improve site performance. Q1 -- $40.2 million

Net loss for second quarter 2001 was $92.6 million, and includes a restructuring charge of $26.2 million related to a workforce reduction and excess real estate, equity-related compensation of $11 million, and other non-cash charges of $8.6 million.

Akamai’s customer base under recurring contract was 1,333. New customer highlights include signing up electronics retailer BestBuy.com and Novartis, a world leader in healthcare. Akamai also expanded its reach over the Internet. The company’s distributed network now includes 11,689 servers, up from 9,743 in the first quarter. Akamai’s servers are now deployed in more than 820 networks in 62 countries.
