Amazon agrees to operate Waterstone’s U.K.-based web site

Amazon.com Inc. has taken over the operation of yet another retailer’s web site. Amazon announced today that it will operate the web site of HMV Media Group’s Waterstone’s, a leading book retailer in the U.K.

Waterstone will relaunch www.waterstones.co.uk powered by Amazon's e-commerce platform. A Waterstone's team will provide the editorial content for the new site, Amazon.co.uk will be the seller of record, providing inventory, fulfillment, other content and customer service for the site.

Amazon earlier this year took over operation of Borders Group Inc.’s Borders Books and Music site. Last year, it reached agreement to operate the Toys R Us Inc. site.

"This partnership enables Waterstone's to offer our customers the best of both worlds -- outstanding book knowledge and content from the U.K.'s No. 1 bookseller, combined with Amazon.co.uk's expertise in online operations, quality of fulfillment and after-sales support. We are delighted to be working with them," said Peter Mitchell, business development director for Waterstone's. "This is good news for Waterstone's and its customers."
