Walgreen and AARP launch a web store

Walgreen Co. sees a lot of green in gray. The retailer is teaming up with the American Association of Retired Persons to launch a new e-commerce site and catalog.

The target market for the new alliance are AARP’s 39 million members and baby boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964, that AARP says spend more than $225 billion annually on health care. Baby boomers also account for about 61% of all over-the-counter medication sales.

The new web site–AARP.walgreens.com–will carry more than 20,000 discounted health, beauty and wellness products. As an incentive to order online, AARP and Walgreen are offering free shipping on orders over $50 and a 5% product discount. “Our members represent a large percentage of this group and our relationship with Walgreens will provide them with discounts and easier access to a wide variety of health-related products,” says an AARP spokesman.

The new site also allows customers to return items to a local Walgreens store. Once they are on the site, which links to Walgreens.com, visitors can also refill prescriptions and access an extensive health care information library. Walgreen is No. 71 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
