Borders.com fills the role of fulfillment provider
Borders Group Inc. has selected Baker & Taylor Inc., a Charlotte, NC, distribution company to the books and entertainment industries, to be the fulfillment provider for the new Borders.com.
Baker & Taylor will provide fulfillment services to the Borders’ site from its facilities across the United States. The company, which has five regional distribution centers, is one of the book industry’s largest wholesale and distribution companies with an in-stock inventory of 1.1 million SKUs, including 875,000 books; 248,000 music SKUs; 63,000 DVD SKUs; and 2,500 game SKUs, sourced from over 38,000 vendors. Baker & Taylor, which says it is capable of delivering to 98% of the U.S. population within two days and to 73% in one day, was acquired last year by Castle Harlan Inc., a New York-based private equity investment firm, in a deal valued at $455 million.
"We selected Baker & Taylor as our primary fulfillment partner because of their excellent track record with consumer-direct fulfillment of all of the product types we`ll offer at Borders.com, and their ability to serve our customers in the superior manner they deserve," says Borders Group vice president of e-business Kevin Ertell.
In March Borders announced that the chain was ending its third-party relationship with Amazon.com and building its own e-commerce site on an IBM WebSphere platform. The site is scheduled to go live in the first quarter.
