Bombay shutters its trio of e-commerce sites
The Bombay Co. Inc. is out of both the stores and e-commerce business.
The retailer, No. 277 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, has shut down its e-commerce operation. “The Bombay Company, Bombay Outlet and Bombay Kids web sites have discontinued online operations,” the retailer says in a posting on BombayCompany.com. “We would like to thank you, our loyal online customers, for your business over the past years and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
On Monday the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Texas approved a bid submitted by Gordon Brothers Retail Partners LLC and Hilco Merchant Resources LLC to acquire Bombay’s U.S. business operations. The bid stipulates that Gordon and Hilco would begin store closing sales at Bombay`s nearly 400 U.S. locations next week and continue closing stores through the end of January.
On Wednesday Bombay, which recorded web sales of $23.5 million in 2006, also began advertising a going-out-of-business sale on its e-commerce sites with discounts of at least 20% on most items.
While Bombay’s e-commerce sites are now closed, the web operations were not part of the Gordon and Hilco bid. It’s unclear if Bombay will keep its remaining e-commerce assets or sell them through another auction. Bombay’s e-commerce sites were operated under a third-party agreement with Amazon Services.
