Online retailer Buy.com has begun showing BuyTV on broadcast television. The weekly half-hour series started last Sunday morning and is available to more than 5.6 million households in Southern California. Carriers include Time Warner Cable, Cox Cable, DirecTV, EchoStar and Dish Network.
BuyTV launched last year at Buy.com, No. 38 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, and through distribution partners including iTunes and YouTube. The program offers shoppers a variety of content, combining e-commerce education with entertainment.
Content includes product countdowns of the “Top 10” hottest-selling games, books, movies, music and technology; how-to segments with step-by-step information from product experts on setting up or troubleshooting popular gadgets; featured product review segments and interviews with leading manufacturers; and entertainment industry news.
“It is quite a testimony to the popularity and rich content of our show that it is coming to traditional television,” says Neel Grover, CEO and president of Buy.com. “This new platform will offer consumers a new way to enjoy BuyTV -- from the comfort of their couch.”
Developed at Buy.com’s in-house studio, BuyTV segments have been streamed more than 8 million times from Buy.com, and nearly a quarter million times from YouTube, the company says. Buy.com plans to launch BuyTV nationwide by the end of next year.
