Abebooks purchases a 40% stake in LibraryThing.com
Abebooks Inc. has purchased a 40% stake in LibraryThing.com, a book catalog and social networking site.
LibraryThing.com has 35,000 members who have catalogued more than 2.7 million books. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. “The most exciting part of this deal is the unique information LibraryThing.com generates about books and book-buying habits,” says Abebooks CEO Hannes Blum. “This data will help people find and buy more books on our site, and we’re going to help LibraryThing.com by exposing it to millions of Abebooks customers.”
Abebooks, No. 67 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, has been making deals and acquisitions to bolster its position as the largest online independent bookstore. In March the company acquired FillZ, a U.S. book inventory and order management company that assists booksellers with marketing their books on various third-party book sites and online marketplaces.
Boris Wertz, chief operating officer at Abebooks, will speak at the Internet Retailer 2006 Conference & Exhibition in a session titled Affiliate Marketing: The Unsung Hero of Online Marketing.
