Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Supports Industry Standards and Global Synchronization Effort

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. and BENTONVILLE, Ark. - UCCnet, a not-for-profit, tax-exempt subsidiary of the Uniform Code Council (UCC), today announced Wal-Mart will utilize UCCnet’s standards-based Internet services within the company’s supplier community for product registry and standards-based, item information services to further enhance their collaborative capabilities with their trading community. The two organizations will work together to implement strategies and tactics to facilitate the rapid on-boarding of suppliers onto UCCnet’s services.

“The core functionality for our use of the UCCnet system is communicating in a common way, up-to-date item information with our suppliers in a standards-based environment,” said Kevin Turner, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Wal-Mart. “Wal-Mart supports the use of industry standards for EDI and UPC numbers and believes that UCCnet provides the foundational services for the global integration of standards in a collaborative environment using the Internet.”

“Wal-Mart’s commitment to industry standards and to UCCnet’s Global Synchronization Services exemplifies their leadership as a visionary for the future of collaborative e-commerce” said Emil Martinez, Vice President of Business Development, UCCnet. “As the leader in enabling collaborative e-commerce, the time is now to implement industry standards and global synchronization capabilities through UCCnet.”

The integration of industry standards and data synchronization are widely recognized components that are vital to realizing the true bottom line benefits of e-commerce in today’s business environment. Utilizing UCCnet, Wal-Mart and its supplier community will be able to reduce costly administrative errors and decrease lead-time requirements for new product introductions and changes to existing item information.

Wal-Mart and its suppliers will have access to common product authorization files to ensure the right information for the right products is always available to all trading partners in a secure environment. Wal-Mart will be able to receive updated information on products that they currently sell, or on products that they are interested in selling in the future. When a supplier updates this product information or introduces a new item, the information is automatically communicated to Wal-Mart via UCCnet.

UCCnet will act as a checkpoint within Wal-Mart’s supplier community, ensuring that all product information is standards compliant. UCCnet will also provide a repository for Wal-Mart to “pull” standardized item information and integrate, in near real-time, into their product maintenance systems. With the UCCnet platform, Wal-Mart and its trading partners will be using standardized item information of the highest integrity in their e-commerce transactions.
