Online retailers reduced their workforces by 231 in August, says new report

Online retailers cut 231 jobs in August, according to the latest survey from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. Dot-com companies laid off a total of 4,899 people in August, the company reports. Twenty-one dot-com companies closed their doors in August vs. nine in July. The August figure is the lowest since last August, when companies cut 4,193 jobs.

The largest job cuts came from web portals, which cut 1,700 jobs in August, followed by technology companies—the suppliers of infrastructure services and technology to web sites—which cut 1,117. Consumer service dot-coms cut 728 jobs and financial service dot-coms, 428.

"The decline in job cuts may not necessarily be an indication of an imminent turnaround. It is more likely that dot-com firms are running out of employees to cut," said John A. Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
