Amazon launches its computer store with phone-based sales help

Amazon.com launched its new computer store today and announced that Santa Ana, CA-based Ingram Micro Inc., a wholesale provider of technology products and supply chain management services, will provide enhanced logistics and product fulfillment services. Ingram Micro currently is a distributor for the Amazon Electronics store.

Amazon`s new computer site features:
· Online and phone help: Product information will be available online and sales help on the phone at (888) 533-5659.
· Buying advisor tool will recommend models based on budget constraints and anticipated uses.
· Advanced search will allow customers to select a computer based on its specific components and features.
· Side-by-side comparisons will allow customers to compare price, speed, memory size and other features of multiple computer models side by side on a single screen. Customers can also compare the best-selling, top-of-the-line, entry-level or popular models with a click of a button.
· Accessory finder will permit a search for compatible peripherals and software for an existing computer based on its operating system and available interfaces.
· Links to rebates: Eligible rebates are linked directly to products so customers can easily access and print rebate forms for added value.

The site will also offer refurbished computers from established third-party sellers like Essex Technology Group, Overstock.com and TechSmart, Inc.

The Amazon Computer store is offering free standard shipping on all new notebook computer orders through Labor Day.

Ingram Micro will expand its relationship with Amazon.com to include customized order fulfillment services for desktop and notebook computers and accessories.

"Ingram Micro shares our customer obsession, and they have deep expertise in the highly complex skill of distributing computers and related products," said Carl Gish, vice president of electronics at Amazon.com. "We know they will provide timely and accurate delivery of orders that customers enjoy and expect from Amazon.com."

Amazon also recently entered a pick-up-and-return agreement on electronics products with Circuit City stores to start in November.
