Boris Wertz last week completed a transition out of his role as chief operating officer at AbeBooks Inc. While remaining a member of the board of directors and an advisor on key projects for the online retailer of new, used, rare and out-of-print books, Wertz is creating a venture capital business with Burda Digital Ventures, a German media company that is the majority shareholder in AbeBooks. His new venture will target consumer Internet investment opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.
“Boris has been a key figure in our success over the past five years,” says AbeBooks CEO Hannes Blum. “The good news is he will still be able to make valuable contributions as a member of our board.”
Wertz joined AbeBooks in July 2002 after JustBooks, an online books marketplace he co-founded, was acquired by AbeBooks. Three employees of AbeBooks, No. 70 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, will take over his responsibilities in what the company calls “a new-look senior management team.”
Laura-Lea Berna has been promoted to vice president of operations. She has been with AbeBooks since September 2002 in a variety of positions, most recently director of customer support and operations.
Shaun Jamieson has been promoted to director of sales and account management, and president of Fillz.com, an AbeBooks subsidiary. Jamieson joined the company in December 2004 and has been manager of sales and account management and director of business development at Fillz.com.
Thomas Nicol, director of marketing since April 2007, takes on additional responsibilities, including a position on the board of BookFinder.com, another AbeBooks subsidiary.
