In order to safeguard cardholder data, Visa and MasterCard have established a common industry security standard, the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard, which applies to all members, merchants and service providers that store, process and/or transmit cardholder data.
This new standard aligns Visa`s Cardholder Information Security Program (CISP) and MasterCard`s Site Data Protection (SDP) Program. Other card companies operating in the United States, including American Express, Discover, JCB and Diners Club, have also endorsed the PCI Data Security Standard.
