Al Capone and Madame Curie Get to Know Your Rabbit

Can’t find 1943’s Madame Curie? No luck locating Brian De Palma’s Get to Know Your Rabbit? Embarrassed to admit wanting to own Gymkata? None of the three have been released on DVD. However, Amazon.com and Warner Home Video have launched a promotion allowing online shoppers to decide which Warner Brothers films, including those three, will be the next to hit the silver disc.

The two companies have jointly nominated 30 films from various genres and decades for which Amazon.com shoppers can vote. Voting for the promotion, DVD Decision 2006, ends June 30. On August 8 the companies will announce the ten winning movies: five debuting on Dec. 5, 2006, and five on Jan. 2, 2007. All of the films will be remastered and contain added bonus features where available. Each title will sell for $19.97.

Titles on the ballot range from older classics (Al Capone and Sunrise at Campobello) to more modern sleepers (One Trick Pony and Mike’s Murder) to little-known cult favorites (Carny and The Illustrated Man). Featured stars include Lucille Ball, Kirk Douglas, Karen Black, Ava Gardner, Alan Hale Jr., Sidney Poitier, Dame May Whitty, Burt Reynolds, Richard Boone and Rod Steiger.

The first two DVD Decision promotions, in 2003 and 2004, drew more than a quarter million votes and sold nearly half a million DVDs at the outset of their release, says Amazon.com, No. 1 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites.
