Sales tax software vendor Avalara acquires New Horizons Systems
Avalara, a provider of web-hosted software that helps online retailers manage sales tax across multiple states, has agreed to purchase New Horizons Systems LLC, whose software identifies the geographic areas of taxing jurisdictions. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Avalara will incorporate New Horizons’ technology into its AvaTax sales tax management software. “By layering shape files for state, county, city and special taxing district boundaries onto a map, business professionals can visually see the intersection of these geographic boundaries and the resulting highly accurate taxing regions,” says Rory Rawlings, founder and chief tax automation officer of Avalara.
Without such views of taxing regions, shippers often resort to using ZIP codes from the U.S. Postal Service to identify taxing areas as closely as possible. But because ZIP codes often don’t coincide with taxing boundaries, shippers can only approximate accurate taxes on customer orders, Rawlings says.
