Q1 web sales rise 13% at Talbots


The Talbots Inc. grew its web sales 13% in the first quarter while total sales stayed flat.

For Q1 Talbots posted e-commerce revenue of $28.6 million, an increase of 13% from web sales of $25.3 million in Q1 2005. Total sales rose only 1.45% from $446.5 million in the first quarter of 2005 to $453 million in Q1 2006.

In the first quarter of both 2006 and 2005, the web accounted for 6% of total sales.

Also in Q1 2006, Talbots, No. 88 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, completed its acquisition of J. Jill Group Inc.

On another front, the company is continuing to open new stores. “Our plan is to open approximately 50 new Talbots brand stores in 2006, which would bring us to approximately 1,128 Talbots stores at the end of the year,“ says Talbots chairman and CEO Arnold B. Zetcher. “For the J. Jill brand, we currently plan to open approximately 42 new stores in fiscal 2006, ending the year with approximately 241 J. Jill stores. In total Talbots will end fiscal 2006 with approximately 1,369 stores in operation."
