What color is your search engine?

Search engine and comparison shopping site ShopWiki has introduced an advanced image analysis feature that enables shoppers to narrow product searches by any color.

“We constantly ask how people are shopping and what they do to find what they’re looking for,” says CEO Kevin P. Ryan. “Regarding color, if you’re looking for a red Beanie Baby, search engines simply find ‘red’ and ‘Beanie Baby.’ We surveyed online shoppers and found many know exactly what they’re looking for but to find the item in the right color they wind up having to go from store to store to store.”

The new Search By Color option enables users to narrow product searches by selecting any color from a drop-down menu on the search results page. The feature supports 16.5 million RGB colors. The RGB color model uses red, green and blue combined in myriad ways to reproduce other colors.

ShopWiki.com, which launched in April, combines search and web crawling technologies with consumer-driven wiki technology (that is, content created by users) to help shoppers make more informed buying decisions. The site, for example, enables users to specify price ranges and product features in their search terms—“diamond ring more than 1 carat under $2,000”)—and does not rely on data feeds from retailers, which other comparison shopping sites do. It also features more than 1,300 wiki buying guides written and edited by shoppers.
