New Providence, N.J. – July 19, 2001 – R.R. Bowker, a leading publisher of bibliographic information, has introduced a wide range of powerful new features to booksinprint.com, one of the most authoritative Web-based search tools available for the library and book-buying communities.
The new release of the renowned Web site includes a number of innovative components that significantly enhance the functionality of booksinprint.com. They include the following:
Online Direct Ordering from Brodart
The new release of booksinprint.com will allow librarians to order titles directly from the site through a strategic alliance with Brodart, a leading supplier of books to libraries in the U.S. Users of booksinprint.com soon will be able to select a title from the more than 4.1 million items in the Books In Print database and simply click on a link that will allow them to order that title directly from Brodart. Customers may order single or multiple copies of a title and supply special distribution instructions to Brodart on how many copies of particular titles will go to specific branches. There are more than 1 million items available for purchase through Brodart.
netLibrary eBooks
In another strategic alliance, Bowker has signed an agreement with netLibrary, the leading provider of eBooks and Internet-based content/collection management services for academic, public, corporate, and special libraries. Bowker will load descriptive data and ordering information for the entire netLibrary catalog of more than 30,000 eBooks into the booksinprint.com database to support libraries in their eBook collection development and acquisition processes.
With the addition of the netLibrary catalog, booksinprint.com will now offer the single largest repository of eBook information available in the world. As acceptance of eBooks continues to expand, this growing section of the booksinprint.com database with its robust search and list management capabilities, as well as its existing wealth of bibliographic data, provides additional support to librarians who are actively integrating eBooks into their collection development and acquisitions processes.
Hooks to Holdings Enhancements
Bowker has also significantly enhanced the popular “Hooks to Holdings” feature on booksinprint.com. In addition to using ISBNs to execute searches of local library catalogs, users can now search by LCCN (Library of Congress Control Numbers) and title when they wish to check the availability of a specific item in their libraries.
Bowker’s Hooks to Holdings allows libraries with Z39.50 compliant catalogs to let their professionals and patrons search the library’s catalog directly from booksinprint.com.
In addition to these breakthrough new features, Bowker also announced an agreement with Alibris, the leading global supplier of out-of-print, OSI and rare books. With this agreement, Bowker announced that it will deploy a seamless search and order interface with Alibris on booksinprint.com. By performing a title, author, or ISBN search on booksinprint.com, customers will be able to locate and order out-of-print, out-of-stock-indefinitely, and rare books from the extensive Alibris catalog. This convenience will provide users of Bowker’s database with a simple way to locate hard-to-find books that were not previously available to them.
“The introduction of these amazing new features on booksinprint.com is the result of months of tireless work on the part of our product development, business development and editorial teams, who listened closely to the comments from our customers and built the functionalities into booksinprint.com that our users requested,” said Michael Cairns, vice president of business development for New Providence, N.J.-based R.R. Bowker. “In addition to the new features we’re unveiling today, we have several additional exciting innovations in the works, which we hope to roll out in the fourth quarter of 2001.”
